
Nahariya is located on the Mediterranean coast, 9 kilometers north of Acre. Nahariya was founded in 1934 as a settlement of immigrants from Germany. Following the establishment of the State, Nahariya’s area grew five-fold and it absorbed thousands of immigrants from North Africa and Central Europe. In 1961, Nahariya received municipal status.
Today, the city’s economy is based on industry (including Straus and Zoglobeck among others) and on tourism. It is considered to be a resort town and has numerous hotels and hostels. Along the coast, there is a boardwalk and several beaches. In addition, Israel’s northern-most railway station is located here.
