Nazareth Illit

Nazareth Illit is the largest Jewish city in the Lower Galillee. It was founded in 1954 and received municipal status in 1974. It is located in the Lower Galillee and is neighbors with the city of Nazareth. It is located on the eastern and highest part of a ridge in the Nazareth hills and is about 30 kilometers west of Tiberias. It is a meeting place of Israel’s three religions with a population consisting of Jews, Christian Arabs and Moslem Arabs (about 10% of the population). It is a city which absorbs aliyah - immigrants constitute about one half of its population

Population: 44.000

Children: 10,100

Children at Risk: 2,435 (23.1%)

Children of Immigrants: 4,179 (39.6%)

Children in one-parent families: 1,959 (18.6%)

Rate of matriculation among Grade 12 students: Eligible- 53.2%

The city is rated 5 out of 10 on the Socioeconomic Scale of the Central Bureau of Statistics (10 is the highest rating).

Employment: The proportion of jobseekers is 5.9% as compared to the national average of 8.6% in March 2005.

Immigrants: constitute 46.8% of the population of Nazareth Illit and are responsible for the huge increase in population.
