Safe Summer at Nitzana
A summer camp participant keeps fit while monitoring how her body copes with the exertion
More than 1,100 youth are participating in various summer camps at Nitzana. Each summer camp lasts for five days and offers a range of activities in the village itself and the surrounding region. The UJC Israel Emergency Campaign through the Jewish Agency and the SACTA-RASHI Foundation fund the summer camps.

Both Jewish and Bedouin youth from throughout the Negev, many of them from disadvantaged development towns, are benefiting from a unique summer experience which includes science, nature, sport and much more. The summer camp's expose the youngsters to fascinating and innovative areas of science including solar energy, physics, chemistry and computers. For example, the participants learn about the physics of light and then use solar energy to cook pizzas. The camps programs also include the science of sport as students are shown how exercise and physical exertion affect their bodies. The youngsters go on runs, bicycles rides and swimming and then measure the changes that take place in their physiognomy following these activities.

The summer is the peak time for the innovative educational activities, which take place throughout the year, for disadvantaged youth from the Negev. The purpose of this program is to introduce this population sector from Israel's south to the study of science and stimulate an interest, which will always stay with them. But for the unique endeavors of Nitzana, these underprivileged youngsters may otherwise never encounter how fascinating the world of science can be.
