| Nitzana Director David Palmach and KEDMA students start the Hanukkah race. |
It has become a Hanukkah tradition at Nitzana to celebrate the festival together with soldiers from neighboring bases on the Israel-Egyptian border. The highlight of the festivities as always was running with the Hanukkah torch - as new immigrants and veteran Israelis alike bore this symbol of Maccabee heroism. The torch united all Jews and recalled the defiance of the Hasmoneans in the face of Greek attempts to sway them away from Judaism. For Hanukkah desert trips were organized including a 20 kilometer competitive race between the army base and the settlements of the region. The Hannukiah itself was lit with participation of young Habad representatives, and the Shin Shin volunteers organized an impressive fire-writing display. Festivities concluded with a Hanukkah banquet.
