Youth Futures in Tiberias

The Youth Futures Program in Tiberias addresses the needs of 240 children ages 6-13 and 110 youth ages 14-18, through two groups of Trustees: 7 from the Noar Oved and Lomed, and 7 locals. All are experienced in working with children at risk, and in addition to their participation in numerous training sessions, are supervised by the Branco Weiss Institute in preparing a personal work plan for each child.

Of the 240 elementary school children. Each Trustee works with the children as a group for 4 hours a week, in addition to one-on-one meetings with each child. The children also meet their Trustee once a week at the Tapuah Center for a computer enrichment activity.

Of the 110 teenagers enrolled in the program, 30 are participating in the Noar Oved and Lomed "DROR" classes that create organic classrooms inside the schools and offer help with the pupils' school work. The remaining youth are enrolled in a Branco Weiss program, which emphasizes strengthening participants' sense of self worth and confidence.

Orly Osadon, the Program Coordinator, is enjoying full cooperation from the municipality, and social workers from the Welfare Department are made available for any questions or supervision needed, and has developed a connection to the community through various volunteer programs, such as National Service soldiers (for young children) and IDF teachers (for teenagers). The program has the warm support of the Mayor of Tiberias, as well as that of the Deputy Mayor who is responsible for education in the city and is a member of the advisory committee.

In Tiberias, Youth Futures is being funded by a three way partnership between the Crown Foundation (The Chicago Federation), an Israeli Donor and the Jewish Agency.  In its current format, the program  is only able to focus on 20% of the children in Tiberias who are at risk.  Further investment is needed in order to reach a larger number of children.
