Teachers and parents should likewise engage children with parables conceived by our sages, as our sages taught us not to underestimate the power of a good parable, which can help people attain a better understanding of the Torah (Midrash Shir Hashirim 1). When relating a parable, make sure to tell the story point by point as if it really happened. Even though the child realizes that it is only a parable and not reality, as he listens his mind conjures up imagery as if the story really did happen, arousing a great deal of interest along the way. In chapter three of this book we related the parable about a shoemaker's prayer at length - even though many of the details are not necessary for the lesson behind the parable - such that it will excite the child and inspire him to be less materialistic as he grows closer to the Almighty, studying Torah and working the Almighty with all his heart.
