Chovat Hatalmidim: Message to Teachers and Parents (34)

We really should be waiting with the emotional connection until the child matures, as it is difficult for a child to feel true Hassidic excitement.

Note that whenever the Torah delineates the observance of "edicts" (Chukim) together with "laws" (Mishpatim), the term "edicts" always precedes the term "laws". This is because the "laws" have a logical basis to them, not only intellect-based logic, but also instinct-based logic. An example of instinct-based logic is a young child's desire to kiss his parents; even though the child does not recognize with his intellect why he desires to kiss his parents, his instincts tell him that it makes sense to kiss them. This, in fact, is the highest form of "knowledge"; his heart yearns for him to kiss his parents, and that is more powerful than all the intellect in the world.
