Johannesburg Tuesday Salad Club Visits Region
19.5.2008

Forty years ago, two young Johannesburg couples decided to establish a club for invited members, with two goals in mind: one to meet regularly at a restaurant and the other to raise funds for scholarships for young people who need support for completion of their studies.

The members of this club have since been meeting on Tuesday at one or two restaurants of their choice and the funds they raise are from "fines inflicted" for "misdemeanors" - such as failing to notify the club members that they will not attend, or coming late, etc.
The money collected from the "fines" are donated to students from all sectors of the population. The Chevra Kadisha assists in managing this Scholarship Fund.

The members of the club visited Israel during the month of May 2008 in order to celebrate Israel's 60 Anniversary. Keren Hayesod were mainly in charge of land arrangements and through their offices, a visit to Partnership 2000, Beit Shemesh/Mate Yehuda, South Africa/Washington took place.

The group was entertained to an Ethnic Lunch at the home of Lily Aziz, one of the women who participated in an Ethnic Festival Cooking event that Partnership 2000 organized with Washington in 2007. The Ethnic Cooking Project is one of the programs incorporated in the Women's Empowerment Project, supported by SA WIZO and P2K.
Some of the women in the group are active  SA WIZO supporters.

After a great Kurdish lunch, which the members of the club enthusiastically partook of, they visited the Music Conservatory of Beit Shemesh, to listen to a performance of  young talented musicians from different Olim groups.

In 2007, Marina Friedman Director, and Sophie Pikovsky, senior violin teacher, accompanied six outstanding pupils to perform in South Africa and one of the unforgettable events was a Gala Concert with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

Two couples in the visiting group, attended this concert and were delighted to hear Leah Pintov, one of the young talented violinists who performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra in Johannesburg at this intimate concert in Beit Shemesh.
