WASHINGTON FEDERATION SUPPORTS REGION DURING TIME OF CRISIS
by Ira Kerem, Washington DC Community Representative in Israel

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington over the past year has raised almost $20,000,000 for emergency needs connected to the present security situation in Israel. The federation earmarked part of its Israel Now funds for use in its Partnership 2000 region for the following projects:

  • $250,000 for the purchase of an armored school bus for children in the moshavim of the Adulam region who must travel through Palestinian villages and territory to reach their school in Gush Etzion
  • $126,000 to purchase four 4x4 armored vehicles for use by the civilian and border guards to patrol the border area and the town of Beit Shemesh
  • $100,000 for running an intensive care ambulance
  • $60,000 in order to extend trauma therapy to everyone in need in the area of Beit Shemesh
  • $40,000 to run an all night emergency clinic for residents of Beit Shemesh and the Adulam region
  • $50,000 for guards at the summer day camps
  • $19,692 to help subsidize summer day camps for Ethiopian children and children from other low income families
  • $25,000 for Midreshet Beit Shemesh to run programs for Ethiopian children after school.

In June, when these donations were announced, the Beit Shemesh community center organized a letter of thanks that was signed by over 1,000 Beit Shemesh residents. The letter expressed the Israelis' sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Jewish community of Washington and for a partnership relationship which was such a source of comfort during these difficult times.
