ABSORBING ETHIOPIAN OLIM
by Herzl Yonah, Director, Beit Shean Community Centers
As you know, for the past few years we have been cooperating within the framework of a number of projects for the Ethiopian immigrant community. I feel that it is especially important, during these uncertain times, to pay tribute to the long-standing supportive cooperation we have been fortunate to have from the Cleveland Jewish community.
I have no doubt that the central activities of the Cleveland community and Partnership 2000 have brought about, over the years, a significant change among the Ethiopian immigrants who have taken part in the various projects in Beit Shean. Some of the projects have already shown positive results and the results of others remain to be seen in the future.
An example of these positive results is the singing group, which is now recording its second disk, the program for young couples, the young leadership program, the afternoon daycare center for young children and the accessing of services. These frameworks have created among the Ethiopian population expectations for programs that would advance their connection with the Cleveland community.
I wish to stress that the operation of these programs, economic and moral support for them, and regional cooperation are slowly assisting the Ethiopian community in their gradual integration into the local community. This is occurring through their self-realization, without obscuring their past and their identity and through emphasizing their uniqueness.
I would be most grateful if you would convey our thanks and our sincere feelings to all concerned for your contribution that stems from love and a sense of purpose.
