4,000 Australians in Support of Terror Victims
15.10.2001

Over 4,000 people gathered at Caulfield Park last Sunday (23 September) at a rally in support of Israel and the victims of the terror in both Israel and the US.

Organised by the State Zionist Council of Victoria and the Jewish Community Council of Victoria with the support of over 50 local community organisations, rally organisers were extremely pleased with the level of support.

The key-note speech was delivered by Federal treasurer, The Hon Peter Costello, MP. Other speakers included HE Mr Gabby Levy, Ambassador of Israel; Mr David Lyon, Consul-General of the United States and Mr Michael Danby, MP, Federal member for Melbourne Ports.

The common theme to all the addresses was the importance of fighting terrorism, especially in light of the recent events in New York. All speakers also made reference to Israel's ongoing battle with terrorism and those who would deny the Jewish state's right to exist.

State Zionist Council of Victoria President, Mr Philip Chester launched the Ani Tzioni campaign during his address. He said that the SZC had established a website that would provide information to those interested in learning the facts of the current conflict, as well as providing an opportunity for people to become directly involved with the effort to support Israel.

Immediately preceding the rally, almost 1,000 people marched from Mizrachi synagogue to Caulfield Park in a sign of solidarity with Israel.

The rally received extensive media coverage, with reports of event being included in the evening news bulletins of all five television networks.
