Preparation of a Detailed Architectural Plan for the Ein Yahav Airstrip
The Ein Yahav airfield currently serves both the IDF and the region, operating a regular flight route between Tel Aviv and Ein Yahav. The airfield is also used as a platform for regional events such as the annual Model Airplane Competition.
With the passing by the Knesset of the Motor Sports Law, considerable potential has opened up for the development of use of the airfield and in its surrounding area for holding events. When the necessary authorization has been obtained, the airfield will become a site for various festivals in addition to the international model airplane event that is already held there.
Planning and Implementing of Bicycle Paths
Marking of the paths, signs (informational and directional), marketing and production of publicity material for the bicycle paths selected after preparation of the program. The project aims to fulfill the tourism-vacation potential represented by the cycling world, in light of increased interest in bicycling for pleasure, fitness and health in Israel and in the world. Cycling provides an alternative to traveling by car. The aim is to preserve the natural landscape and to strengthen visitors' sense of connection with the region's open spaces.
Arava Visitors' Center
The project calls for production of a master plan for a Visitors' Center in the Arava, which would serve as a local tourism center, directing tourists towards the various settlements, and as a coordination center for guided tours of agricultural and desert attractions.
Arava Economic Development Unit (EDU)
The Unit serves as the first address for entrepreneurs arriving in the region, wishing to establish or develop a business in any field. The Economic Development Unit operates a network of counselors and professional guides in economic fields and relevant required fields, such as agricultural counseling, computers, environmental affairs and more. The Unit also examines ideas by professionals (feasibility studies) and provides an initial response for projects in mobilizing sources of financing for feasible ventures.
Advertising and Marketing the Region
During the past few years many tourism enterprises, including B&Bs in particular, have been developed in the Arava. This project supports the Tourism Department, which assists tourism entrepreneurs with consulting and guidance while they are establishing their enterprises. Since there has been intensive development in the field of tourist accommodations, the Dept. founded a Reservation Center, which arranges accommodations for tourists, and provides information to callers. The Dept. also aims to strengthen the region's image as a destination for potential tourists through the production of a variety of advertising media, attractions and festivals.
Desert Arts Center
This project initially grew out of the desire to brand the Arava region with arts, thereby creating new channels and opportunities for regional development by arousing interest in the region among hitherto untapped population segments.
Currently a number of options are under examination, including the holding of an Arts Festival, and/or renovation of an impressive silo as a focal Point for arts and tourism.
ADMINISTRATION
Purchase of Video-conferencing Equipment
In today's advanced technological age, one of the best ways to work on joint projects and maintain regular contact among active volunteers is through videoconferencing, which enables sound and intense encounters between students participating in joint educational projects and fosters more intensive discussion of projects and the entire process of partnership. We plan to hold 5-6 such conferences annually between students at the Shittim School in the Arava and those at Bialik College in Melbourne, as well as 10-12 videoconferences among volunteers on various committees.
Formative Evaluation of Reciprocal Relations
One of the main goals of the Partnership 2000 program is development of reciprocal ties between Diaspora Jewish communities and residents of their Partnership Regions in Israel. The project aspires to reinforce and intensify Jewish identity and links with Jewish culture and with Israel, through unmediated meetings between Jews from Israel and from the Diaspora. The evaluation will function as a formative assessment that will help decision makers and project leaders on the Partnership 2000 and Israel Department staff to assess the project's effectiveness.
