The Arava International Center for Agricultural Trainees (AICAT) was established in 1994. The first group of 15 Thai participants was sent by the Princess Chulaporn Institute, which is run by the Thai Armed Forces. These first students were soldiers sent to study agriculture so that they could set up border settlements in Thailand, following the example of the Israeli Army Nahal groups. One day a week, they learned to cultivate vegetables and flowers and studied protected species, soil-water ratios and more. Today, there are over 300 participants (with a promise of more to come) at the Center, whose 28 instructors and counselors all reside in the Arava.
