The Economy of the Galilee Region: Recent Developments

November 1, 2006 / 10 Cheshvan 5767

Latest data

Northern hoteliers continue to suffer
The effect of the war on Israel's hotel sector continued into September, according to data published on 23 October. Total hotel nights of foreign tourists slumped by 16.6% in September (based on seasonally adjusted data), following steep declines of 20.3% and 21.9% in July and August respectively.

Can we assume that Northern hoteliers suffered more in this continuing decline than hoteliers in other regions of the country? Data on hotel nights by region are only available through August (August data were only published on 31 October), and it is reasonable to assume that since the war continued until 18 August, its effect on hotel activity was indeed stronger in August in the North – and in Haifa – than in the rest of Israel. Fig. 1 shows this to be true.
