Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943) (Austria)

Scientist and Nobel Prize laureate. He was the discoverer of the basic human blood groups (A, B, AB, and O) and of the Rhesus blood factor. This discovery led to the matching of donors and recipients in blood transfusions. His discovery that the Rhesus monkey could be infected by polio led to Salk's development of his vaccine.
