Albert Shanker (1928-1997)

Albert Shanker

Albert Shanker (U.S.) - labor leader. Shanker, began as a teacher  in NYC but soon became involved in the Teachers' Labor Union. He was singularly successful in leading strikes for better conditions. During the late 1960's there was tension between Black militants and the union of which most of its members were Jewish. Shanker was also active in the  American Federation of Teachers, and the Jewish Labor Committee.
