William Steinitz (Prague) is known as the "Father of Modern Chess". Steinitz began as a brilliant talmudic scholar with an interest in mathematics. He won the world championship in Vienna by defeating Adolph Anderssen in 1866 and held on to the title until 1894, when he in turn was defeated by Lasker.
