Orde Wingate

Known as Hayedid (the Friend). Wingate was born in 1938 in India. In 1936, he was posted to Eretz Israel where he soon became friendly with the leaders in the yishuv. Wingate received permission to train a group of Haganah soldiers to defend the Iraq- Haifa pipeline. His brilliant and unorthodox methods in training his "Night Squads " were an important ingredient in the development of the IDF. His soldiers included Yigal Alon and Moshe Dayan.

Testifying before the Woodhead commission in 1938, Wingate declared that a modern Jewish state was "the best hope of the Arab world". His pro Zionist activities earned him the ire of the British government, which had him first transferred to Ethiopia and then to India where he was killed behind Japanese lines in march 1944.
