The Department brings Zionism to Jewish communities in Spain
“The Zionist caravan is a wonderful initiative of the Department for Zionist Activities of the WZO that brought new, varied and exciting activities to the Jewish community here,” effused Sammy Tevet, Israeli Ambassador to Portugal. Mr. Tevet was only one of the many public figures and community leaders who responded enthusiastically to the Zionist Caravan initiated by the Department for Zionist Activities and organized in cooperation with the Zionist Federation of Spain.
Featuring journalist and lecturer Marcello Kiselevsky and singer Ilan Tal, the caravan, staffed by Department employees Naftali Levy and Itzik Yaakov, visited nine communities throughout the peninsula in December, bringing a message of caring and solidarity from Israel to the Jews of Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, Melilla, Gibraltar, Ceuta, Madrid, and Lisbon. Both in the major metropolises and the small and isolated communities, audiences responded enthusiastically to the speakers, entertainers, films, print material, and exhibitions that arrived on their doorstep. For many, the Caravan amounted to the only live contact with Israel and the Zionist movement that they had had in a very long time.
