In May 2005, The Department for Zionist Activities of the WZO, initiated an academic conference held in Jerusalem to mark the first "Herzl Day" as stipulated by the "Herzl Law" adopted by the Knesset. The theme of the conference was "From 'Altneuland' to Tel Aviv".
As a result of the conference, the Department decided to issue a book consisting of some of the papers delivered at that conference. We have also asked other specialists in the field, public figures and members of the Zionist Executive, to contribute their thoughts on the theme of Israeli reality as seen in light of Herzl's vision.
The book's title will be From Altneuland to Tel Aviv - of Dreams and Deeds.
The Academic editors are the Head of the Department Dr. David Breakstone and
Dr. Ariel Feldstein, Academic Head of the Sapir College, who also contributed articles.
The book is due to appear in time for the opening of the 35th Zionist Congress.
Some of the articles will be in Hebrew, others in English and there will be a round table discussion in both Hebrew and English.
Articles appearing in the book will be posted on the website prior to the Congress. Delegates and participants are invited to respond to the articles.
Enclosed are the first two articles:
- Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, Had Herzl Been Granted More Time.
- Yossi Sarid, Is Theodor Herzl Resting in Peace?
