A mixed Danish / Jewish group spend an intensive and exciting week in Israel on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the rescue of the Danish Jews.
The Zionist Federation of Denmark together with the Friendship League of Denmark joined forces to bring a group of Jews and Christians to Israel for an intensive and exciting week of touring and activities to mark the 60th anniversary of the rescue of the Danish Jews.
The two events marking the rescue of the Danish Jews highlighted the tour. The first was a moving ceremony at the Remembrance Hall of Yad Vashem, which continued to the Valley of the Communities for a singsong in Yiddish and Danish and an emotional musical performance from Klezmer Zahav in Denmark. The next evening 500 people attended an informative symposium at the Diaspora Museum Ceremonial Hall where Minister of Integration Bertel Haarder, the historian Michael Mogensen from the Danish Centre for Holocaust Studies, and Former Minister Michael Melchior shared their thoughts and ideas with the crowd. The evening was closed when the entire audience rose to their feet to thank oboist Henrik Goldschmidt, who played his own compositions including Yizkor. In addition to these two unforgettable evenings the tour visited many interesting places in Jerusalem and around the country including Kibbutz Neot Mordechai to meet with Danish kibbutz members and pioneers; the International Harp Contest in Tel Aviv; Mini-Israel; Beit Gavriel; a magnificent piano concert on Mount Meron; and the Sculpture Park in Karmiel.
The return to Denmark did not mark the end of this memorable tour, as every participant became an ambassador for Israel by giving lectures, writing articles, and becoming a PR advocate for Israel.
Special thanks go to Keren Hayesod, Keren Kayemet, WIZO, and the Department for Zionist Activities of the World Zionist Organisation for contributing to the success of this tour.
