Israeli Art Exhibition

Three rooms in the Beautiful WIZO house in central London were taken over by dozens of wonderful paintings by up and coming Israeli Artists. Last years exhibition featured already established artists, while this year the artists chosen were less well known and thus their work is more affordable by the general public. There was a wide variety of subject material in a number of different styles, representing the range of areas worked by artists in Israel today. A couple of hundred invited guests attended a reception on the evening of 21st March to eat, drink and see the artworks. To add atmosphere, there was also a pianist 'tinkling the ivories'.

The exhibition and reception were organized jointly by WIZO and the Zionist Federation of Great Britain. Michelle Vogel of Wizo spoke and introduced Anke Adler-Flottke, an important director of the auctioneer Christies. She gave a very interesting talk on the history of Israeli art from the first Jews to arrive in the land in the 19th century until the present day, taking in names like Modigliani, Soutine and Chagall. She made it clear that Jewish/Israeli artists should be judged on their artistic prowess rather than their origins. ZF Chairman Estelle Gilston presented Anke with a certificate to thank her for her assistance.
