Bat Mitvah Visit to Mevaseret Absorption Center

April 20, 2006 / 22 Nissan 5766

Former USA ambassador to Italy and Austria, Mr. Mel Sembler of St. Petersburg, Florida visited the Mevaseret Zion Absorption Center on April 16, together with his wife Betty and his granddaughter Eve. They visited Israel in honor of Eve's Bat Mitzvah and had decided to include a visit to Mevaseret as part of their itinerary.

At the absorption center,  they received an overview by Jewish Agency representative Shira Ozery, viewed a film about Ethiopian aliyah, visited the mock supermarket for new immigrants, and visited the local day care center.

In addition, the family met with veteran Ethiopian immigrant, Kassa Beyasin, who is currently studying International Relations at Hebrew University. They listened with great interest as Kassa shared her personal aliyah story with them.

The family found their visit both enjoyable and informative. They learned about all aspects of the absorption process as described by their hosts, and came away with a better understanding of both immigrant absorption in Israel and the role played by the Jewish Agency.
