Sigd Holiday for Ethiopian Olim

The Jewish Agency's Tzahal Absorption Center and the Ari School in Safed are continuing their successful partnership with an exhibition held for both parents and children revolving around the Sigd holiday. The Sigd holiday is unique to the Ethiopian Jewish community, commemorating both the giving of the Torah and the communal gatherings held in Jerusalem in the days of the first Temple.

The Jewish community in Ethiopia would mark the day with a half-day fast and a special pilgrimage to the highest mountain in their vicinity, followed by prayers and a festive meal. The holiday commemorates the precept of pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

At the Ari School exhibit, parents and children view authentic Ethiopian tools and utensils and participate in joint arts and crafts projects. More visitors are expected at the exhibition, including Ari school students and residents of the Tzahal Absorption Center.
