Letter To Emissaries Regarding Na'aleh Project

Zeev Bielski, Chairman of the Executive
Jerusalem, 27 Cheshvan, 5766
November 29, 2005

I am turning to you and all your colleagues, Jewish Agency emissaries of aliyah and education in the Diaspora, with regard to the Na'aleh project, which, as I am sure you are already aware, has for many years been one of the central and important flagship programs for promoting aliyah among children and youth.

I was aware of this program in the past, but since having been selected to my current post several months ago, I have had a number of opportunities to deepen my familiarity with this program and meet personally with Na'aleh participants and alumni, as well as parents, principals and teachers.

There is simply no room on this page to describe the impression this special, magnificent group made upon me, a group of young men and women who left their homes and families behind to come here, to Israel, to complete their high school studies and prepare themselves for aliyah and life in Israel. I stood in awe as I met with the parents in Moscow, who entrusted us with their children in the hope of providing them with a promising future as a citizen of the State of Israel. From my knowledge of the outstanding educational work of the program's administrators and faculty, I could guarantee the parents that their children were in good hands and that we would do everything we could to ensure their safety and allow them the opportunity to maximize their potential and settle into Israeli life as smoothly as possible.

The Na'aleh program is a source of pride to us all, as thousands of youngsters have emigrated to Israel since the program began. Although they had the option of returning to their countries of origin after their terms of study, most of them nevertheless chose to enlist in the IDF, continue their studies in institutions of higher learning in Israel, and build their lives and their futures in Israel. The figures further indicate that many of the participants' families have decided to follow their children and emigrate to Israel.

There is no question that the emigration of the Na'aleh youngsters and their absorption in Israel is an inspiring success story. These young men and women, who are leading the way for their parents and relatives that remain behind in the Diaspora, embody the story of the Zionist movement from its early days until our time.

1,500 students are studying this year in Na'aleh programs throughout Israel. I am confident that we can significantly increase this number and even double it in the coming years. This matter is in your hands. Only with the efforts of each and every one of you, the emissaries, and the mobilization of all of us involved, can we meet this challenge.

Therefore, out of a sense of Jewish and Zionist mission, and a sense of obligation towards Jewish youth in the Diaspora, I ask that you intensify the efforts to increase the numbers of students enrolled in the Na'aleh program.

Mrs. Inna Zilbergretz, head of the youth branch of the Aliyah Department, is ready to assist you with any information and details you might need concerning the Na'aleh program. She can be reached at any time, by phone – 02-620-4337 – and by e-mail – innaz@jafi.org.

I am at your service at any time and will be very happy to respond to any request, suggestion or idea that you may have in advancing this and other issues on our agenda.

With best wishes,

Zeev Bielski
