Some 10,000 Jewish youngsters, age 8 to 25, around the world are currently taking part in Jewish Agency winter camps (in the US, Europe, and the former Soviet Union) and summer camps (in South Africa). The Jewish Agency sent around 50 young Israelis to serve as counselors in the camps, which will focus in strengthening Jewish identity, enhancing the relationship with Israel, and combating the new anti-Semitism.
The camps in the FSU are emphasizing training young adults as new leadership in their communities. In Europe, the theme is how to be a Zionist in the Diaspora and how to fight the new anti-Semitism, and in South Africa, the camps are focusing on educational programs about Israel as the center of the Jewish world.
There has been an increasing demand for young Israelis to serve as counselors in Jewish camps around the world. In 2003, the Jewish Agency sent close to 2,000 counselors to hundreds of summer and winter camps around the world.
