What is the Israel Professional Internship Program?

The Program

The Israel Professional Internship Program is designed for students and young professionals interested in gaining valuable work experience in israeli firms and institutions. The  tailor-made internships are between two to six months. Interns work in their professions in a variety of locations - including hospitals, hotels, law firms, high-tech companies, schools, community centers, TV and radio stations, government offices and in the public sector. For a list of internship options, click here

Interns receive a small monthly-stipend ($75) from the Jewish Agency and may be eligible for university credit at the discretion of their university. Additionally, the program offers participants monthly activities, lectures, trips, and joint cultural and social events with Israelis.

Hebrew Proficiency

The necessity of Hebrew proficiency depends on the amount of daily contact with Israelis within each individual professional field. While not required, a working knowledge of Hebrew is always advantageous in facilitating an easier adjustment to the social environment and helping one establish relationships with co-workers.

There are several options for Ulpan study if an intern would like to study Hebrew while in Israel. Ulpan is not considered part of the Internship Program and those wishing to study will be required to cover the costs on their own. For information about ulpanim click here.

Acceptance Criteria

Jewish students with at least one year of professional studies or university graduates with or without experience in their profession, between the ages 19-35 are eligible for the Israel Professional Internship Program. The Program is intended for independent adults (single or married) who are interested in experiencing work and living in Israel in an autonomous, self-sufficient framework.

Please note: This program is open to tourists only! If you are a "Returning Minor" (Katin Chozer) check your status carefully by consulting with your shaliach or aliyah representative.

Professional Placement

Program organizers work with individual interns to provide placements that match particular fields and areas of interest.  The possibilities depend upon the intern's profession and qualifications, as well as the general employment situation in Israel at the time of application.  Employment cannot be guaranteed, as final acceptance is given only once interns are in Israel, and have been interviewed by their prospective employers.  However if the placement does not work out, we do our utmost to place interns elsewhere.

Accommodations

Interns are encouraged to find their own accommodations, however if space is available, there may be an option to stay in a local absorption center.  Absorption centers offer dormitory style accommodations at the highly subsidized cost of $30 per month.  Meals are not provided.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is compulsory for all participants, and must be arranged by the individual through their insurance company.
